Training programme on ‘Principles and Practices of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture’ for tribal fish farmers of Assam

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a 3-days residential training programme for tribal fish farmers of Udalguri and Baksa districts of Assam on ‘Principles and Practices of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture’ during February 11-13, 2026. The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. The programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K. Yadav, Senior Scientist; Dr. Simanku Borah, Senior Scientist; and Dr. Niti Sharma, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 30 fish farmers (including 2 females) attended the training program.

The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on February 11, 2026 in which Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Guwahati Centre welcomed the guests and the participants and urged the fish farmers to interact with the resource persons and also share their experience. During the 3-days training programme, emphasis was given on sound and scientific fish farming. Important topics like composite fish culture, integrated fish farming, fish disease management, environment monitoring, fish seed production and rearing, nutrition and feeding of fishes, pre and post-stocking management in fish ponds were covered. A field trip was also organized to M/S Nitul Fish Farm, Hajo, Kamrup Rural, Assam on 12th February, 2026 with the objective of giving practical exposure to the trainees. During the field trip, trainees got hands-on experience on pond preparation and farm management.

The valedictory session of the training programme was held on 13th February, 2026. Dr. P.K. Hazarika, OSD, Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council (KWAC), Assam and chief guest of the valedictory session appealed to the fisher friends to take full advantage of the training program in enhancing their knowledge and skills. In the valedictory session Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist and Coordinator of the training program presented a brief training report. He emphasized that there is scope for tremendous development and employment in fisheries sector of the state and fish farmers should adopt scientific fish farming for better income. The tribal fisher friends expressed their satisfaction on the training program.
