Training programme on ‘Inland Fisheries Management and Aquaculture’ for tribal fish farmers of BTC and Kamrup, Assam during January 28-30, 2026

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a 3-days residential training programme for tribal fish farmers of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and Kamrup Metro, Assam on ‘Inland Fisheries Management and Aquaculture’ during January 28-30, 2026. The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. The programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K. Yadav, Senior Scientist; Dr. Simanku Borah, Senior Scientist; and Dr. Niti Sharma, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 32 tribal fish farmers belonging to Bodo and Karbi communities attended the training program.

The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on January 28, 2026 in which Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Guwahati Centre welcomed the guests and the participants and urged the fish farmers to interact with the resource persons and also share their experience. Dr. P.K. Hazarika, OSD, Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council (KWAC), Assam and chief guest of the inaugural session appealed to the fisher friends to take full advantage of the training program in enhancing their knowledge and skills. Mr. S. Sarma, Legal Adviser, BTC and Mr. T. Ahmed, Press Adviser, BTC and guest of honours in the inaugural session also expressed their views. Mr. T. Ahmed highlighted the importance of fish as food and also stated that fish farming can play a pivotal role in rural livelihood, employment generation and income.

During the 3-days training programme, emphasis was given on sound and scientific fish farming. Important topics like composite fish culture, integrated fish farming, fish disease management, environment monitoring, fish seed production and rearing, nutrition and feeding of fishes, pre and post-stocking management in fish ponds were covered. The valedictory session of the training programme was held on 30th January, 2026. In the valedictory session Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist and Coordinator of the training program presented a brief training report. He emphasized that there is scope for tremendous development and employment in fisheries sector of the state and fish farmers should adopt scientific fish farming for better income. The tribal fisher friends expressed their satisfaction on the training program.
