Barrackpore,West Bengal.
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore organized a five-day training programme on “Diagnostic Techniques for Infectious Diseases of Fish” from 17th to 21st November 2025. A total of 22 participants, comprising researchers, students, and entrepreneurs, attended from Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (Jharkhand), Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University (Uttarakhand), Sanjivani Matsya Vikas Co-operative Society (Maharashtra), West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (West Bengal), and Vidyasagar University (West Bengal). The training was inaugurated on 17th November by Dr. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, who highlighted the critical role of disease diagnosis in safeguarding fish health in inland open water ecosystems.

The programme aimed to familiarize trainees with the fundamentals of fish disease diagnosis, while also building a clear understanding of monitoring parameters across biotic and abiotic components of aquatic environments. On 18th November, a field day at Shyamnagar Aquaculture Complex, West Bengal provided hands-on demonstrations of field-level diagnosis and on-site sampling of infectious fish diseases.

The curriculum combined theoretical sessions with extensive practical demonstration, covering sampling techniques for environmental and fish health assessments, and laboratory-based diagnostic methods. Participants gained exposure to a wide range of techniques including isolation of bacteria and fungus, antimicrobial sensitivity test, DNA isolation, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) of targeted genes, gel electrophoresis, and sequence analysis. Under the overall supervision of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, the training was successfully coordinated by Dr. A.K. Bera, Principal Scientist, and Dr. M. Shaya Devi, Scientist.

The technical assistance was provided by Mr. Abhijit Kumar Gupta during the practical demonstrations at field and laboratory.
