Empowering Tribes, Enriching Ecosystems: ICAR-CIFRI Celebrates Jan Jatiya Gaurav Varsh at Khalsi Wetland

On 4th November 2025, ICAR-CIFRI celebrated Jan Jatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada (Nov 1–15) with a vibrant outreach program at Khalsi Wetland, Nadia, West Bengal, honoring the legacy of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

The event spotlighted his pivotal role in championing tribal rights across the Chhotanagpur Plateau. Mr. Ganesh Tanti and Mr. Jaydeb Sardar shared compelling insights into Birsa Munda’s life and enduring impact.
Centered on the theme "Health and Wellness," Dr. R. K. Manna, Head of Division, ICAR-CIFRI, engaged participants in discussions on the nutritional benefits of Small Indigenous Fishes (SIFs) found in the wetland ecosystem. He emphasized their role in enhancing food security and improving community health. The institute’s ongoing conservation initiatives to protect SIF biodiversity were also highlighted.

The program received active support from Dr. Lianthuamluaia and other CIFRI staff members, reflecting a collaborative spirit. With over sixty fishermen in attendance, the event reinforced ICAR-CIFRI’s commitment to tribal empowerment through sustainable fisheries and inclusive development. It served as a meaningful tribute to Birsa Munda’s vision and a step forward in integrating traditional knowledge with scientific practices for community well-being.
