ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati Regional Centre organized NABARD sponsored 5-days training program on ‘Post-harvest Management and Utilization of Waste in Inland Fisheries’

The ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a five-day NABARD-sponsored training programme on “Post-harvest Management and Utilization of Waste in Inland Fisheries” during 27–31 October 2025 premises of the Centre located at HOUSEFED Complex, Dispur.
A total of 30 participants attended the programme comprising of fish farmers, field-level extension workers, students, and other stakeholders from 7 districts of Assam (Nagaon, Morigaon, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup, Nalbari, Barpeta). The programme was coordinated by Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist and Dr. A.K. Yadav, Senior Scientist of the Centre under the overall guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, and Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head of Regional Centre, Guwahati. The programme aimed at sensitizing fish farmers/ fishers about scientific post-harvest handling, value addition, and efficient utilization of fish waste to minimize losses, enhance product quality, and promote sustainable income generation in the fisheries sector.
The inaugural session was held on 27 October 2025 in the presence of Shri Loken Das, Chief General Manager, NABARD Assam Regional Office, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest, and Col. Abhishek, Director, UIDAI, who attended as Guest of Honour. In his inaugural address, Shri Loken Das appreciated ICAR-CIFRI’s efforts in capacity building of fish farmers in Assam. He emphasized the need for value addition and waste utilization in fisheries to enhance farmer income and promote sustainable livelihood. He also highlighted NABARD’s commitment towards supporting rural entrepreneurship, FPOs, and innovative projects in fisheries and aquaculture. Col. Abhishek, in his remarks as Guest of Honour, urged participants to adopt modern post-harvest practices in fisheries to reduce losses and improve efficiency. He stressed on linking fisheries with technology and entrepreneurship to create new livelihood opportunities for youth in the sector.
Over five days, participants attended 16 technical sessions covering various aspects of post-harvest management, fish processing, preservation, value addition, and waste utilization in inland fisheries. The sessions were conducted by experts from ICAR-CIFRI, ICAR-CIFT, Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Department of Fisheries (DoF), Assam Fisheries Development Corporation, NABARD, NFDB, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). Hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions were also conducted to provide participants with practical exposure. A field-cum-exposure visit to Panchatirtha Aquargo Pvt. Ltd., Hajo, Kamrup was also organized for the benefit of the trainees. Participants expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting that the training had significantly enhanced their awareness and skills to implement scientific post-harvest handling at the grassroots level for improving productivity and income.
The valedictory session of the training program was graced by Dr. R. Bordoloi, Directior, Extension Education Institute NE Region, Guwahati. In his address, Dr. Bordoloi encouraged participants to act as change agents in their communities, applying the knowledge gained to reduce post-harvest losses and utilize fish waste efficiently. He appreciated the initiative of ICAR-CIFRI and NABARD for empowering fish farmers through skill-oriented training. During the session, Dr. Borah presented a detailed training report summarizing the sessions and activities. Certificates and training manuals were distributed to all participants upon successful completion of the course. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Yadav.
