ICAR-CIFRI Organized ‘Ilish Utsav’ under National Mission for Clean Ganga to Promote Hilsa Conservation
6th July, 2025
The ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore in collaboration with National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), marked 4-6 July, 2025 with a vibrant celebration of Ilish Utsav, honouring the iconic Hilsa (Ilish)—a symbol of Bengal’s rich culinary heritage and cultural identity.
The day-long festival brought together scientists, chefs, policymakers, fishers, and the public to celebrate the seasonal arrival of Hilsa while spotlighting sustainable fishing practices and inland fisheries research. Inaugurated by dignitaries from ICAR, the Department of Fisheries, and local administration, the event seamlessly blended scientific knowledge with cultural pride. The grand inauguration of the event took place on 4th July 2025, with the ceremonial opening of food and exhibition stalls by Hon’ble Minister Shri Biplab Roy Chowdhury, Minister of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal.
A major attraction was the culinary exhibition, where both traditional and lesser-known Hilsa recipes were revived. Signature dishes such as Shorshe Ilish (mustard Hilsa), Bhapa Ilish (steamed Hilsa in banana leaves), Ilish Paturi and Ilish Biriyani dazzled attendees, offering a rich taste of Bengal’s heritage. These dishes were not just gastronomic delights but also tributes to generations-old recipes that continue to define Bengali identity.
The Utsav also featured scientific sessions led by CIFRI experts, discussing Hilsa migration, breeding, and conservation strategies. An exhibition of Hilsa varieties, traditional fishing gear and preservation techniques further educated visitors on the fish’s ecological significance.
Folk music and dance added vibrancy to the occasion, reflecting Bengal’s riverine traditions. Meanwhile, dedicated booths enabled fishers to interact with scientists, learn about sustainable technologies, and explore training opportunities. CIFRI also emphasized eco-friendly practices, awareness about breeding cycles, and promotion of value-added Hilsa products to enhance fisherfolk livelihoods. The event is part of ICAR-CIFRI’s continuous engagement under NMCG to build public awareness and promote community involvement in aquatic biodiversity conservation.
Ilish Utsav 2025 emerged as more than a festival—it became a platform for cultural revival, scientific dialogue and community empowerment. It fostered deeper public understanding of Hilsa’s ecological importance while rekindling nostalgia and pride in Bengal’s timeless culinary legacy.More than 450 people including students assembled in this programme.
Through this event, ICAR-CIFRI reaffirmed its commitment to conserving aquatic biodiversity, promoting sustainable inland fisheries, and uplifting the lives of those who depend on the rivers. In blending science with tradition, Ilish Utsav set a new benchmark for how culture and conservation can go hand in hand.”Dr. B.K.Das , Director of the Institute deserves appreciation as it is the brainchild of him” Minister said.
