Sensitization Programme Organized By ICAR-CIFRI In Ellappully, Palakkad, Kerala

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, in collaboration with the Ramassery ​​Gandhi Ashram of Elappully, Palakkad, and National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, organized a sensitization program for the farmers of Elappully village at the Elappully Krishna Shri Auditorium. The purpose of the program was to sensitize the farmers about the sustainable development of the inland fisheries sector in the village. The program was inaugurated by Shri. George Kurian, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Minority Affairs. In his inaugural address, the Minister said that Elappully Grama Panchayat, which has more than 500 water bodies, is a very suitable area for inland fish farming and that the main objective of the project to be implemented in partnership with the Central and State Governments is to uplift the fish farmers of Elappully Grama Panchayat to the mainstream in a phased manner with social and economic participation. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, welcomed the gathering and gave a brief overview about the institute’s activities.

Smt. Revathi Babu K., President of Elappully Grama Panchayat talked about the inland water resources, concerns and needs of the village. Shri. Satheesan P. V., Deputy Director of Fisheries, Department of Fisheries, Palakkad, gave an overview of the various schemes promoted by the department and the options of fish farming practices that can be taken up in the village. Shri. Sebin Antony, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, Thrissur, described about the financial assistance provided by the bank. Shri. Pudussery Sreenivasan, Director of Sarvodaya Kendram, Gandhi Ashramam, talked about the current status of farmers. Dr. Deepa Sudheesan, Senior Scientist of CIFRI Kochi Research Station, presented on the upcoming project in Elappully. Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul, Senior Scientist of CIFRI Kochi Research Station interacted with the gathering.
