Skill Development and Capacity Building Program for Fish Farmers of Supaul District, Bihar

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore, successfully conducted a seven-day skill development and capacity building program on “Inland Fisheries Management” for fish farmers in Supaul district, Bihar, from January 7 to 13, 2025. The program aimed to enhance the participants' knowledge and practical skills in sustainable fisheries management to improve fish production and livelihoods. A total of 30 fish farmers actively participated in the training. During the inauguration program, Dr B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, emphasized the importance of improving expertise to ensure sustainable livelihoods. He encouraged the farmers to utilize the potential of inland water resources effectively and adopt scientific approaches to boost fish production and productivity.
The training covered essential topics such as water quality management, nursery and pond construction, enclosure culture for livelihood enhancement, induced breeding, hatchery management, ornamental fish farming, and economic evaluation of various rearing systems. Sessions on fish feed management, disease control, and the impacts of climate change on inland fisheries were also conducted.
The program also featured field visits to various facilities and farms, providing hands-on exposure to the practical aspects of inland fisheries. Trainees toured the Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery unit, Ganga fish conservation unit, and fish feed mill at ICAR-CIFRI. They also visited the Naihati fish farm & market, Halisahar fish farm, Ghalib Street ornamental fish market, ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre, and the East Kolkata Wetlands, offering them invaluable insights into fish production and management in open water resources.
The training concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants, who expressed high satisfaction with the program. The initiative was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Dr. Canciyal Johnson, with technical support from Shri Sujit Choudhury, Shri Manabendra Roy and Dr. Avishek Saha , under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI.
