Training for Fish Farmers of Madhepura District, Bihar was inaugurated by former Vice Chancellor of ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai

A training program on “Inland Fisheries Management” was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, from 19th to 25th November 2024, with the objective of enhancing knowledge and disseminating technology to fish farmers of Madhepura District, Bihar. As an inland state, Bihar recognizes inland fisheries and the freshwater aquaculture sector as key contributors to economic development, with the government actively promoting the sustainable utilization of its fishery resources.

A total of 27 farmers, along with an accompanying Fisheries Development Officer, participated in the training, which focused on improving management strategies to enhance fish yields sustainably from inland waters. The inaugural session, held on 19th November 2024, was graced by Dr. Gopal Krishna, Former Vice-Chancellor and Director, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai. A Hindi book titled ‘Bihar rajya mein antarsthaliya matsiki prabandhan’ specially prepared for Bihar farmers, was released on the occasion, edited by Dr. B. K. Das, Dr. Aparna Roy, and Dr. Pranab Gogoi. During the inauguration, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, welcomed the participants and encouraged them to enhance their skills in inland fisheries management to create employment and secure livelihoods. The week-long training covered critical aspects of fish farming, including pond construction and preparation, water quality management, induced breeding techniques, composite fish culture, nursery and rearing pond management, fish disease management, feed formulation, enclosure culture, and ornamental fish culture techniques.

The program also included practical sessions on water and soil quality analysis, fish feed preparation, and hands-on training. Participants were taken on a field exposure visit to ornamental fish markets and culture systems at the East Kolkata Wetlands, aquaculture fields of ICAR-CIFA in Kalyani, and private hatcheries in North 24 Parganas, allowing them to observe best practices and advanced techniques. At the conclusion of the training, participants expressed their satisfaction, noting that the knowledge and skills gained would help them achieve higher fish production from their ponds. The training program was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Dr. Sajina A.M. This programme is expected to significantly contribute to building the capacity of farmers and sustainable fisheries development in Madhepura District of Bihar
