Awareness on AMR conducted by ICAR-CIFRI

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week was effectively observed at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore from 18-24th November 2024, centred around the global theme, Educate. Advocate. Act now. The inauguration of “World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2024” took place successfully at ICAR-CIFRI on 18.11.2024, in Barrackpore. The event was attended by Dr. Gopal Krishna, Former Director of ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, and Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, along with trainees and fishermen from Madhepura district, Bihar, with the objective of enhancing awareness among farmers and fishermen. In engaging sessions, ICAR-CIFRI experts Dr. B. K. Das, Director, and Dr. A. K. Bera, Principal Scientist and Co-PI of the AINP-AMR project, explained Antimicrobial Resistance, its causes, and its harmful effects on the ecosystem. Participants learned about judicious antibiotic usage, aquaculture antibiotic alternatives, and the long-term economic and ecological benefits of limiting antimicrobial resistance.
Under the “All India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AINP-AMR) in fisheries and livestock”, ICAR-CIFRI educated the public, farmers, professionals, scholars, and students. All events were managed by Dr. A. K. Sahoo, Senior Scientist, Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist, and Dr. A. K. Bera, Principal Scientist, with the support of Dr. Palash Ghorai, and Miss Anushka Das, under the direction of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. On 20.11.2024, in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Cossipore, Kolkata, students and faculty from various departments were educated about worldwide antimicrobial resistance and how to stop it. Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness banners and pamphlets were distributed to educate the public about this worldwide concern.
On November 21, 2024, a mega event was conducted in Basanti block, Sundarbans, in partnership with Joygopalpur Gram Vikash Kendra (JGVK). JGVK, a distinguished non-governmental organization that is committed to the promotion of sustainable development and the preservation of subsistence in the Sundarbans. Esteemed dignitaries, including Dr. Purnendu Biswas, former Vice Chancellor of WBUFAS, Mr. Ganesh Sengupta, chairman of IGF, Denmark, Mr. Niels Bo Karlsson from Denmark, and Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, attended the occasion. Banners, placards, and leaflets were distributed to a large number of women of the village household, who were informed about the global issues arising from antimicrobial resistance. This was followed by a huge rally in the vicinity, which was attended by over 1000 individuals, including school students from Vivekananda Shiksha Niketan Model High School, women from the NGO, CIFRI staff, and other participants. In the same vein, Dr. A. K. Bera, Principal Scientist, and Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist, educated a select group of students from class VII-X on the same matter. It continued at Acharya Prafulla Chandra College in New Barrackpore on 22nd November 2024, where the audience will be sensitized about the causes and consequences of antimicrobial resistanceThe initiative aims to encourage the adoption of responsible practices in agriculture,aquaculture, and animal husbandry to mitigate its spread. The activities will effectively raise awareness among everyone regarding the critical issue of AMR. The event organized throughout the week will serve as a crucial step toward community-level efforts in combating AMR.
