ICAR-CIFRI empowering women fishers of Sundarbans

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), in collaboration with the Kultali Milan Tirtha Society, organized an Input Distribution and Awareness Programme in Kultali, Sundarbans, under its STC programme. The initiative is aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods for marginalized Scheduled Caste (SC) women.

At the event, 100 women beneficiaries were each provided with 6kg of fingerlings and 100kg of fish feed to support sustainable fish farming in the region. Dr. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, reiterated his commitment to empowering underprivileged communities through such initiatives. He also announced plans to develop a village in the Sundarbans into a “modern village,” with improved infrastructure and enhanced livelihood opportunities, particularly focusing on women’s empowerment.

Mr. Lokman Molla, Founder and President of Kultali Milan Tirtha Society, expressed his gratitude to CIFRI, remarking, “This is a commendable initiative by CIFRI. Their support will have a lasting impact on these women, fostering sustainable development in this region.”

The programme is seen as a crucial step towards uplifting fisherwomen in the Sundarbans, providing them with the resources to improve their economic condition through sustainable fish farming. CIFRI’s initiative is expected to drive long-term socio-economic development in this remote and vulnerable region, contributing to a brighter future for its communities.
