ICAR-CIFRI carried out survey on fisheries and ecology of River Brahmaputra

Scientific and technical personnel of ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati surveyed the entire stretch of River Brahmaputra in Assam from Sadiya to Dhubri. The survey was carried out in the month of September to document the fish diversity, catch composition and ecology (soil and water quality) of the river.

River Brahmaputra, which drains the entire state of Assam, is the lifeline of fisheries in the region. A total of 10 sampling stations Sadiya, Guijan Ghat (Tinsukia), Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Biswanath Ghat, Tezpur, Uzanbazar (Guwahati), Goalpara, Jogighopa, Dhubri were surveyed. The survey team comprised of Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Dr. A.K. Yadav, Dr. Simanku Borah, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Mr. B.C. Ray and Mr. Amulya Kakati. It was observed in the survey that Cabdio morar, a small indigenous cyprinid fish dominate the fish landings in the entire stretch of the river.

The highly prized migratory Hilsa was observed in catches in lower stretch of the river, particularly at Guwahati and Goalpara. It was seen that majority of water quality parameters were in favorable range for fisheries, except for comparatively high turbidity. Interactive meetings on present status of fisheries of River Brahmaputra were organized with the stakeholders.
