ICAR-CIFRI Hosts Field Day on Fish Safety and Wetland Management in Manika Maun, Muzaffarpur and Barila Chaur, Hazipur

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) Barrackpore organized a field day at Manika Maun, Muzaffarpur, and Barila Chaur, Hazipur on 24.07.2024 and 25.07.2024 respectively. The event focused on discussing issues related to the safe environment for fish amidst climate change, the management of chaurs and mauns, and the changing water quality and nutrient value of indigenous small fishes. Farmers raised their concerns regarding various issues such as low yields, fish health, growth of aquatic weeds and the occurrence of fish diseases.

Scientists from ICAR-CIFRI, professors from the College of Fisheries, Dholi, and state fisheries officials participated in the discussions. They provided guidance to the fishermen on better wetland management practices. Dr. Archana Sinha, Head of Aquatic Environmental Biotechnology, ICAR-CIFRI, highlighted the food and nutritional importance of small fishes as well as their ornamental value. She emphasized on the proper utilization of these high-value fishes and encouraged fishermen to visit ICAR-CIFRI for guidance on better wetland management and fish health issues.

Dr. Shivendra Kumar and Dr. Mukesh Kumar from COF, Dholi, along with Mr. Arijit Kumar, Mr. Siddharth Kumar, Mr. Rajeev Kumar, Mr. S.K. Prabhakar, Ms. Viswamani, and Mr. Dhirendra Kumar Thakur from the District Fisheries Office in Muzaffarpur and Hazipur, actively participated in the discussions. The field day was coordinated by Dr. Kavita Kumari, Scientist of ICAR-CIFRI, with technical assistance from Mr. Anjon K Talukder and Mr. Debasish Singha. Mr. Kishore Sahni and Mr. Kundan Kumar successfully arranged the event.
