Skill development cum capacity building program for the fish farmers of Saran District, Bihar

ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute Barrackpore, organized a seven days skill development cum capacity building program on “Inland fisheries management” for the fish farmers of Saran district of Bihar. A total of 30 fish farmers participated in this training program from 02 to 08 May 2024 intending to strengthen their knowledge and skills on different aspects of inland fisheries management for sustainable fish production and livelihood. In his interactions with the farmers, Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, urged them to increase their expertise to ensure sustainable living. He asked fishermen to explore the available potential of inland water resources for enhancing production and productivity by adopting scientific knowledge.

A fundamental understanding of water quality management, nursery and rearing pond construction and management, enclosure culture for improving livelihood, induced breeding, hatchery management, ornamental fish rearing, information about PMMSY and economic evaluations of different rearing systems was imparted to the trainees. The participants received lectures on various kinds of topics related to managing fish feed and fish diseases. The training sessions included a general overview of climate change and its influence on inland fisheries. The trainees were also introduced to the institute's facilities such as the Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery unit, Ganga fish conservation unit and fish feed mill.

The trainees also had field exposure visits to the Halisahar fish farm, the Galib Street ornamental fish market, ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre, ICAR-CIFA Kalyani centre, East Kolkata wetland, which aims to improve farmers' practical abilities for enhancing fish production in open water resources. The seven-day training program was concluded with certificate distribution to the participants. The trainees conveyed how highly satisfied they were with the capacity-building training program. Under the guidance of the Director, ICAR-CIFRI the training programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Dr. Canciyal Johnson with the able technical support from Shri Sujit Choudhury, Dr. Avishek Saha and Mr. Anjan Talukder.
