ICAR-CIFRI empowers fishers of Sahibganj, Jharkhand through a transformative training initiative for sustainable fisheries and livelihood

A 5-day training on "Inland Fisheries Management" was conducted for fish farmers of Sahibganj, Jharkhand, from January 16th to 20th, 2024. Sponsored by ATMA, the programme aimed to elevate the knowledge and skills of rural farming communities. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Assistant Director General, Inland Fisheries, ICAR, inaugurated the training programme. Emphasizing the importance of capacity-building in farming and fisheries management, Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute, urged the 21 participating fish farmers to apply the gained knowledge for sustainable livelihoods, optimal production, and increased profits.

The training programme focused on narrowing the knowledge, skill, and attitude gaps among farmers in inland fisheries management, aligning with the vision of doubling farmers' income.The course encompassed lectures covering various subjects, including the ecology and fisheries of inland open waters, sediment and water chemistry, pond management, natural fish food organisms, their significance in open waters, enclosure culture, ornamental fishery, fish feed management, disease management, economic evaluation, and more. Participants were granted access to the Institute's ornamental hatchery units and feed mill, engaging in hands-on training that addressed specific needs.

Practical sessions included topics like fundamental water quality parameters, the preparation of fish feed utilizing locally available ingredients, and the identification of fish pathogens along with corresponding remedial measures. In addition to theoretical sessions, the participants were provided with practical exposure through visits to the East Kolkata Wetlands and fish farms at Halishar. They were also given opportunity to visit the ICAR-CIFE Kolkata regional centre.

The feedback session resonated with the trainees expressing their overall satisfaction and the significant enhancement of their knowledge. The valedictory session of the training programme had the presence of Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR.

In his address, he urged the farmers to apply the acquired knowledge to boost productivity of their farms and encouraged them to share their newfound expertise with other fishers and farmers, fostering the growth of the sector. Under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director of CIFRI, the training programme was meticulously organized. The coordination was led by Dr. Aparna Roy, Senior Scientist, and Dr. Gunjan Karnatak, Scientist at the Institute. Technical support for the programme was provided by Mr. Sujit Choudhury, ACTO, Mr. Manabendra Roy, TO, and Dr. Avishek Saha, TA.
