Tribal women of Saliasahi, Bhubaneswar, Odisha were trained at ICAR-CIFRI

Ornamental fish rearing plays an important role in strengthening the household economy of rural tribal women. ICAR-CIFRI is dedicatedly working with the aim of making them self-sufficient and uplifting their livelihood by providing an alternate source of income through ornamental fish culture. Under this vision, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized a three-day training program on “Opportunities in ornamental fish rearing and management for income generation” for the tribal women beneficiaries from Salia-sahi, Odisha during 21-23, December 2023 under Tribal Sub Plan at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. The training program was organized with the aim to strengthen the skill and knowledge of the tribal women in different aspects of ornamental fish rearing. A total of 12 tribal women beneficiaries from Salia-Sahi area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha were participated in this training program. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI inaugurated the training program and interacted with the trainees and motivated them for the ornamental fish culture. He also urged the trainees to take up the ornamental fish as a small household business model for income generation. The training program emphasized various aspects of ornamental fish culture, which includes the basic introduction to ornamental fish, fish handling, breeding of ornamental fishes, aquarium fabrication, feed preparation and disease management through the combination of theory and practical classes along with the field exposure. The trainees were also introduced to the Institutes facilities such as Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery unit, Ganga fish conservation unit and fish feed mill. The practical sessions on breeding set up of ornamental fishes, aquarium fabrication, aquascaping, feed preparation was organized for the trainees to strengthen their practical skills. The field trip was organized at Solok village and Das Nagar ornamental market in Howrah district for the field exposure to the trainees. The three days training program was concluded with certificate distribution to the participants. Trainees expressed their high level of satisfaction with training program. The training program was coordinated by Mr. M.H. Ramteke, Dr. Lianthuamluaia and Dr. Aparna Roy with the assistance of Sri. Sujit Choudhury, Dr. Avishek Saha, Mr. Kaushik Mondal, Sri. Manabendra Roy, Mrs. Sangeeta Chakraborty, Dr. Shreya Bhattacharya under the guidance and leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore.
