Awareness-cum-input distribution programme for the fish farmers of Sikkim held at 3 districts (Geyzing, Soreng and Namchi) of Sikkim

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with Directorate of Fisheries (DoF), Govt. of Sikkim organized an awareness cum input distribution programme in Geyzing, Soreng and Namchi districts of Sikkim during 20-21 December, 2023. Inputs such as FRP tanks and accessories for starting up ornamental fisheries in the state were distributed among 35 beneficiaries in the three districts of Sikkim under the SCSP and NEH programme of the institute. In Geyzing and Soreng districts, input were distributed among 20 farmers, 10 farmers from each districts and in Namchi district, 15 farmers were given the inputs. The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati and Mr. K. K. Shrestha, Director, DoF, Sikkim.

On 20th December, 2023, the programme was organized in Geyzing and Soreng districts of Sikkim followed by next day programme on 21st December, 2023 in Namchi district of Sikkim. The programme was coordinated and attended by Ms. Niti Sharma, Scientist of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati; Sri Lobsang Tamang, Joint Director, DoF, Sikkim; Mr. Surendra Bhandari, Assistant Director, DoF, Gangtok, Sikkim; Mr. Ducheng Lepacha, Deputy Director, DoF, Geyzing, Sikkim; Mr. Yuvraj Sharma, Assistant Director, DoF, Soreng; Mr. Rochak Subba, Deputy Director, DoF, Namchi, Sikkim; DoF officials and farmers were present in the programme. During the programme, Deputy Director of the respective districts welcomed the participants and explained the purpose of the programme.

Ms. Niti Sharma interacted with the farmers and discussed about the importance of ornamental fisheries in the state. Joint Director and Assistant Directors, DoF, Sikkim thanked ICAR-CIFRI for supporting and taking initiative in starting up ornamental fisheries in the state. They also requested the farmers to rightfully use the inputs for fish culture and to give updates on the progress of their farming. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Assistant Directors of the respective districts of Sikkim. The officials from ICAR-CIFRI and DoF, Sikkim also visited rainbow trout farms in the Sribadam village of Soreng district of Sikkim.
