ICAR-CIFRI organized a training programme for fisheries officials and entrepreneurs of Sikkim on ‘Feed formulation and low-cost feed preparation” in Gangtok during December 20-22, 2023

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati has organized a 3-day training programme for fisheries officials of NE states on ‘Feed formulation and low-cost feed preparation’ during Dec. 20-22, 2023. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. The objective of the training programme was to enhance knowledge of fishery officials and entrepreneurs on fish nutrition and to give hands-on training on feed formulation and low-cost feed preparation using available local ingredients.
The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on Dec. 20, 2023. Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Senior Scientist and Coordinator, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati welcomed the participants and gave an overview of the importance of fish nutrition and feeding in aquaculture. The training programme was attended by 40 fishery officials from Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Sikkim, fish feed entrepreneurs and progressive fishers of the state. Mr. Naresh Sunar, Assistant Director of Fisheries, DoF, Sikkim stated that the state has 1600 km rivers, 850 ha reservoirs, 2285 ha lakes and village ponds consisting of 806 trout units and 1766 carp units producing 455 metric tonnes of fish. He also stated that an urgent need was felt for establishing fish feed mills in the state and to train the officials and farmers on feed formulation and preparation as the state now is fully dependent on fish feeds imported from outside.

The training programme included three days of theoretical and practical sessions, hands-on feed formulation and preparation. Other relevant topics covered were fish nutrition and its importance in aquaculture, feed formulation, feed budgeting for trout farms, feed storage and feeding methods.

The valedictory session of the training programme was held on December 22, 2023. Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati, extended a warm welcome to Chief guest Mr. K. K. Shresthra, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Sikkim. She also welcomed Mr. C. S. Rai, Additional Director, DoF, Sikkim and Mr. Nitesh Gurrung, Deputy Director, DoF, Sikkim and the participants. A brief report of the training programme was presented. Participants shared positive feedback and requested more such trainings in Sikkim covering different districts of the state. Mr. Naresh Sunar, Assistant Director and Co-coordinator of the programme stated that the training programme was much needed in the state. During the recent floods in the state, they faced feed shortage. This training helped them gain knowledge on preparing on-farm feed and could help farmers cope in difficult situations. The Chief Guest distributed certificates to all participants.
Mr. K. K. Shrestha thanked ICAR-CIFRI for conducting the training programme. He opined that the training programme was fruitful and more emphasis was given on local ingredients. Ms. Niti Sharma delivered the vote of thanks.
