ICAR-CIFRI demonstrated on fish disease investigation at East Kolkata Wetland, West Bengal

On-farm demonstration on environmental health and fish disease investigation was conducted by ICAR- CIFRI at East Kolkata Wetland on 7th December, 2023 for the trainee participants from Calcutta University, Kolkata; Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai; West Bengal University of Fisheries and Animal Science, Kolkata; and College of Fisheries, Kishanganj, Bihar Animal Sciences University and associated fish farmers. The aim of the programme was to introduce the trainees with the basics of aquatic environmental health in relation to open water ecosystem as well as to make a clear understanding on various monitoring parameters of different biotic and abiotic components in wetland fisheries. The demonstration was also aimed to provide practical knowledge on field diagnosis, sampling, and analyzing the environmental and fish health parameters.

The field visit cum demonstration was conducted by a team consisted of Dr. A.K. Bera, Principal Scientist, Dr. M. Shaya Devi, Scientist, Mr. Subrata Das, Technical Assistant under the guidance of the Director, Dr. B.K. Das. Dr. A.K. Bera explained the trainees on how to collect clinical information, sampling of disease fishes and how to suggest the farmers regarding the remedial measures and treatment. He further stresses on the relevance of soil and water quality parameters on disease outbreak. Dr. M. Shaya Devi demonstrated the collection and sampling of diseased fishes for identification of bacterial, virus and fungal pathogen. Mr. Subrata Das demonstrated sampling and analysis of soil and water quality parameters.
