Secretary, DARE and DG ICAR inaugurated International Training cum Workshop on “Sustainable Fisheries and Dairy”

International Training cum Workshop on “Sustainable Fisheries and Dairy” under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) of Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India was inaugurated by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR and Chief Guest on 6 December 2023 at ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. The 14 days training programme from 6th to 19th Dec. 2023 aims towards capacity building for the countries in the global south particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Total 24 participants representing from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) are participating in the programme.
Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General, Fisheries and Animal Sciences, ICAR, Ms. Paramita Tripathi, IFS, Joint Secretary, Indo-Pacific Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, Prof. Shyam Sundar Dana, Vice Chancellor, West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Science graced the inaugural session .

Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR advocated the relevance of fisheries and dairy sector across the globe to meet the food and nutritional security and underlined the contribution of expertise from the participating countries. He officially released the publication of “Training manual” and “Training handbook” during the inaugural session.
Ms. Paramita Tripathi, IFS stressed on the future collaboration with countries in Mekong region and urged the participants to strengthen the knowledge gap through learning sessions.
Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG provided an insight into the role of fisheries and dairy research institutes of India and their untiring and significant contributions to the national economy.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI welcomed all the participants and the dignitaries and gave inaugural speech by emphasising on the regional capacity building programme for efficiently extending the knowledge and skills of professionals who are involved in the inland open water fisheries and dairy management through bilateral co-operation of India with the participating countries.
Prof. S.S. Dana, VC, WBUAFS incited the participants to upgrade their knowledge and skill by learning the latest developments in fisheries and dairy sector.

Dr. A.K. Sahoo, the programme coordinator briefed the genesis and overview of the training programme scheduled and urged the participants to effectively utilise the lecture of various experts from fisheries and dairy sector.
Further, the participants representing each country expressed their enthusiasm to gain visions on technology transfer along with the learning of Indian culture. They expressed their gratitude to the Ministry of External affairs and ICAR-CIFRI for the extended support to participate in the International training.
