ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Bangalore conducted a mass awareness program on "Management of reservoir fisheries for enhanced fish production" and distributed coracles under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) program at Banasurasagar, Kerala on 06 December 2023. Ten fishermen under the scheduled tribe category were benefitted by the scheme. The program was conducted successfully under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 50 fishermen attended the mass awareness program. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist & Head, Regional Centre, gave the introductory remarks and detailed on the role of ICAR-CIFRI in inland fisheries development.


Ms. Jesna P. K., Scientist delivered a talk on enclosure culture for the enhancement of fisheries. Mr. Ashique Babu, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala elaborated the various schemes by the Department of Fisheries, Kerala and Mr. Haneefa P, Fisheries Development Officer addressed the fishermen. The office bearers of the Banasurasagar ST-SC Fishermen Co-operative Society interacted actively during the program and emphasised on the challenges faced by the fishermen for their livelihood. The program was co-ordinated by Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Ms. Jesna P. K., and Co-coordinated by Dr. Vijaykumar, M. E., STO and Dr. V.L. Ramya, Scientist.
