ICAR-CIFRI successfully implements cage culture at Kangsabati reservoir, Bankura

A fish harvest cum auction program was organized by ICAR-CIFRI at cage culture site, Kangsabati reservoir, Mukutmanipur on December 2, 2023, in collaboration with Department of Fisheries West Bengal. The program was organized under the project “Cage culture in Kangsabati reservoir” implemented by Department of Fisheries West Bengal in technical collaboration and handholding of ICAR-CIFRI. The purpose of the project was to showcase the potential of cage culture for fish production enhancement in reservoirs of West Bengal and build capacity of fishers on different aspects of cage culture.
The program was graced by Honorable Minister of State Sri Biplab Roychowdhury. Other dignitaries like Special Commissioner Sri. Atanu Kumar Roy IAS, Karmadhakshy Ms. Sujata Mondal, ADM Sri Vivek Basmay,IAS, SDO Ms. Neha Banerji, IAS, Officials of Fisheries Department were also present at the occasion. A large number of fisher’s from the reservoir belonging to 7 Cooperative Societies and local fish vendors, traders participated in the program.


The program started with lightening of the lamp by Honorable Minister, Sri Biplab Rouchowdhury followed by welcome address by Joint Secretary DoF, Ms. A. S. Alvi. In her welcome address she stressed the need for improvement of fish production from reservoirs and wetlands of the state through scientific management and technological intervention. Dr. M. A. Hassan, Head, Fisheries Enhancement and Management Division, ICAR-CIFRI shared the progress of the project and efforts taken by the Institute in successful implementation of the project. He briefed that the project was undertaken for demonstration of cage farming in Kangsabati reservoir, Mukutmanipur and thanked Fisheries Department for sponsoring the project. A battery of 32 cages were installed at the reservoir and stocked with pangasius seed with a target to produce 80 tons of fish in 8-9 months of duration. The project was launched on May 16, 2023. In less than 6 months 48-ton fish yield (60% of the target) has been achieved with around 15% stock reaching marketable size of more than 500g. Dr. Hassan also talked about other technologies and guidelines developed by the Institute for boosting fish production from inland open waters.

Honorable minister Sri Biplab Roychowdhury expressed his happiness on noteworthy progress of the project.

He motivated the implementation authorities and expressed the need for taking up similar initiatives on cage culture in the same reservoir and other waterbodies for production enhancement and benefit of the farmers. Honorable Minister appreciated CIFRI for the hand holding and successfull implementation of the project and expressed his thankfulness to Director Dr. B. K Das for his commitment. Other dignitaries also appreciated the initiative and expressed their satisfaction with the progress of the project. The program also marked commencement of the first fish auction for sale of the produce. The fish marketing of the fish is supposed to continue till March 2024.
