Mass awareness programme on responsible fishing and distribution of coracles to fishermen under TSP in Hogenakkal, Tamil Nadu

A mass awareness programme on responsible fishing was organized by the Bengaluru Regional Centre of ICAR - Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) at Hogenakkal in Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu on 02 November 2023, under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR – CIFRI. The programme was conducted under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) and was attended by 50 fishermen. Coracles were distributed to 10 tribal fishers.

Dr. V. L. Ramya, Scientist welcomed the gathering. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Head, Regional Centre, ICAR-CIFRI gave the introductory remarks and also spoke on role of the institute in improving the inland fisheries sector. Dr. Meenakumari, Former DDG (Fisheries Science) ICAR, New Delhi, addressed the gathering and enlightened them on responsible fishing.

Mr. C. Subramani, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Dharmapuri Region gave the presidential address. Mr. G. Gokularamanan, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Dharmapuri district detailed the various departmental schemes for fishermen welfare. Ms. Jesna P. K. Scientist proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Dr. V. L. Ramya and Ms. Jesna P. K. and co-coordinated by Dr. Sibina Mol S. and Dr. Sonalika Sahoo.
