ICAR-CIFRI extended its support to empower SC community through sustainable fisheries in Chamta Wetland, West Bengal
Chamta Wetland, West Bengal 01th September, 2023
ICAR-CIFRI has extended its support to the SC community of Chamta wetland in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, aiming to help them sustain their livelihoods through in-situ fish seed raising and culture-based fisheries. On September 1, 2023, ICAR-CIFRI provided three HDPE pens for seed raising, which will help them to supplement the demand for fish seed (advanced fingerlings) for stocking purposes. Recently, ICAR-CIFRI had already supplied various fisheries implements to demonstrate the in-situ fish seed raising through pen culture in the wetlands. The demonstration of pen culture has motivated the local fishermen, who are now interested in implementing pen culture through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Under this initiative, beneficiaries will procure fish seed for seed raising in pens, which will ultimately augment the fish production in the wetlands. Dr. B. K. Das, the Director of ICAR-CIFRI, distributed the HDPE pens as part of SCSP scheme. The distribution program was coordinated by Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Scientist, with the assistance of Ms. Sangeeta Chakraborty (T-3) and Mr. Kausik Mondal (T-3), under the guidance of the Director, ICAR-CIFRI. This joint initiative by ICAR-CIFRI and the local fishermen is an encouraging step towards ensuring sustainable fisheries and enhancing the livelihood of the local fishermen.
