Ornamental fish culture as livelihoods of rural women: an initiative of ICAR-CIFRI

Women are the backbone of the rural economy strengthening their willpower and economy can lead to sustainably augmenting their livelihood for the future. On August 19, 2023 input distribution cum awareness programme on ornamental fish culture for the livelihood development of rural women was organized in collaboration with Sasya Shyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonarpur, West Bengal under Ramakrishna Mission. The program was organized to enhance the livelihood opportunities of the SC women's community. Ornamental fish rearing units consisting of FRP tank and other accessories were distributed as a start up materials by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Kolkata.

Dr. Das encouraged and advised the beneficiaries to take up ornamental fish culture to generate supplementary income without disrupting their routine household activities. He also emphasized the importance of the ornamental fish keeping in the eastern part of the country and its export earning, besides domestic potentials and its cottage industry at the village level, which is the best model for economic empowerment to the weaker section of the community. Dr Narayan Chandra Sahu, Head, KVK, Sonarpur, advised the beneficiaries to take up the technology sincerely. He also applauded the initiatives and works taken up by ICAR-CIFRI for elevating the livelihood status of the rural SC community. A live demonstration of the setting up of the ornamental fish culture unit was carried out by the CIFRI team to the beneficiaries. The women beneficiaries were motivated and showed their interest in the scheme. A total of 22 women beneficiaries participated in the demonstration cum start up programme at Krishi Vigyan Kendra. This type of endeavor taken by the ICAR-CIFRI in joint ventures of KVK is successfully implemented by the women beneficiaries of West Bengal and successfully continuing their activities.
