ICAR-CIFRI organized a training for the fish farmers of Jamui District, Bihar

A training program on “Inland Fisheries management” was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 22-28, June 2023, to upscale the knowledge with technology dissemination for fish farmers of Jamui District, Bihar. Being an inland state, it has identified inland fisheries and freshwater aquaculture as a potential sector for the state and the government promotes exploitation and utilization of its fishery resources. In the training, a total of 28 fishermen participated and the training was conducted to appraise and improve the management strategies for enhancement of fish yield in a sustainable way in inland waters.

In the inaugural session on 22nd June 2022, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI welcomed the participants and encouraged them to develop the knowledge and skills of inland fisheries management to generate employment and livelihood security and briefed them about the status of inland fisheries of India. The one-week-long training program emphasized on various topics of fish rearing such as pond construction and preparation, water quality management, induced breeding techniques, composite fish culture, nursery and rearing pond management, fish disease management, feed preparation, enclosure culture, and ornamental fish culture techniques.

There were practical sessions on water and soil quality analysis, fish feed preparation etc. and the trainees were taken to a field exposure visit to the ornamental fish market and culture systems at East Kolkata wetlands, aquaculture fields of CIFA, Kalyani and private hatchery in Kalna. At the end of the training program, the participants expressed their satisfaction and remarked that the knowledge gained by them during the training will help them achieve more fish production from their ponds. This training programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. Sajina A.M., Dr. Vikas Kumar and Shri Sujit Choudhury.
