ICAR-CIFRI celebrated World Environment Day at Barrackpore,HQ

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It was initiated by UNEP to provide a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development and wildlife crime etc. It was first held in 1973, since then every year World Environment Day is celebrated around the globe. This year the theme was Beat Plastic Pollution.

Like every year, ICAR-CIFRI fervently celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June, 2023. In the forenoon, the Institute organized a rally and an Awareness-cum-Sensitization Programme at Sheoraphuli Ghat, Ganga River, Barrackpore to sensitize the general public about the harmful effect of plastic and plastic pollution followed by a plantation programme at CIFRI residential campus. Various types of fruit plants like Rose apple (Syzygium jambos), Mango (Mangifera indica), Indian Sherbet Berry/Falsa(Grewia asiatica), Malta(Citrus sinensis) were planted by the staff members of CIFRI.

In the afternoon session, a series of lectures were organized at the New Auditorium Building of CIFRI, HQ. More than 210 participants attended the lectures through online and offline mode. The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. M.A Hassan. After that Dr. R.K Manna delivered a lecture on “Plastic Pollution in Rivers” and Dr. D.J Sarkar delivered an informative lecture on “ Plastic and Microplastic Pollution”. Prof. (Dr.) Jayanta K Biswas, University of Kalyani, graced the occasion as chief guest and delivered an enlightening lecture on the theme area “Beat Plastic Pollution”. An interaction session was held after the lectures. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Srikant Samanta, ICAR-CIFRI.

The whole event was successfully organized by Dr. M.A. Hassan, coordinator of the programme under the guidance of Dr. B.K Das,ICAR-CIFRI.
