ICAR-CIFRI, Pryagraj observed World Fisheries Day and distributed fish net

World Fisheries Day, 21st November 2022, was observed by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Prayagraj through a Mass awareness program. The program was organized in a fishermen village, Narvar Chaukhatta, Manda, Prayagraj on the bank of river Ganga. The fishermen were sensitized and aware about the fish and river. The cast nets of appropriate mess size were distributed among active and diligent fishermen to enhance their livelihood. The program was addressed by Dr. D. N. Jha, Head of the Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj. He explained the importance of the river and fish for fishermen community and aware for its restoration and conservation. The chief guest of the occasion Shri Rajesh Sharma, Convener GVM and NMCG, Prayagraj addressed the gathered audience and urged the people to keep Ganga river neat and clean. Special guest Shri Manvendra Singh, Ex-Officer, FCI, GOI also graced the occasion and spoke the assembled fishermen.

He told that Ganga river is important for human civilization and we have to respect her, clean her and alive her. The cast nets were distributed among the fishermen by the institute with a caution that they will not catch small size fingerling of Indian Major Carps (IMC) fishes. If these fishes are coming in the net, they will be returned back to the river for further growth. This will help in increasing the population of these fishes which ultimately help in keeping clean Ganga.
