A one-day workshop on “Fish production enhancement was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore on 17August 2022. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the scope of fish production enhancement in reservoirs of West Bengal through cage culture and build capacity of DoF officials, WB on various aspects of cage culture.Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI presided over the workshop.The meeting was attended by Dr. Shamik Das, Joint Director, Dr. UtpalSar, DDF, FFRTC, Ms. A. S. Alvi, DDF, West Zone, Dr. Saptrishi Biswas, DDF, Kolkata and Central zone, Mr. Siddhartha Sarkar, DDF, GZB & North Zone, Dr. Kishore Dhara, DDF, SPU and other DoF officials.
The Workshop started with a welcome address by Dr. M. A. Hassan. In his welcome address he stated the need for rejuvenation of fisheries sector in the state and briefed about various technologies and guidelines developed by the Institute for boosting fish production from inland open waters. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI addressed the officials and stressed on improvement of fish production from reservoirs and wetlands of the state through scientific management and technological intervention. He remarked that implementation of
cage culture in reservoirs of West Bengal by DoF with technical expertise of the Institute can boost the fish production from the state. He assured all support and technical guidance including handholding to DoF for implementation of cage culture projects. Dr. S. Samanta, Head, REF Division, Dr. U. K. Sarkar. Head, RWF Division, Dr. S. K. Nag, Head, FRAI Division, Dr. B. K. Behera, Head, AEBN Division also attended the workshop and expressed their views on the scope of cage culture in West Bengal.
Sessions on different aspects of cage culture encompassing design, construction, operation, and culture protocol of commercially important species, feed, feeding and health management in cages were organized for the participants by a team of scientists working on cage culture, and scope of cage culture development in West Bengal under PMMSY. After the sessions an active interaction session between the DoF officials and scientific staff of the Institute was organized.
