National Ranching Programme inaugurated by DG, National Mission for Clean Ganga

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata launched National Ranching Programme on 14 May 2022 by releasing 2 Lakhs of Wild Fish Germplasm of IMC (Labeo rohita, Labeo catla and Cirrhinus mrigala) in river Ganga at Gandhi Ghat, Barrackpore, West Bengal. Shri G. Ashok Kumar, IAS, Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India inaugurated the national ranching programme.

Speaking on the occasion Shri G. Asok Kumar, IAS explained how through Arth-Ganga initiative, National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is not only trying to save endangered species of fishes but also increase the population of the native fishes to ensure sustained livelihood for the fishermen community. Shri Kumar emphasized the importance of conservation and ranching and its impacts on socio–economic development of the fishers of river Ganga. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, explained that 20 lakh Wild Fish Germplasm of IMC will be released under National Ranching Programme at 10 locations all along Ganga river in Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

As a part of the programme, a mass awareness campaign on Hilsa and Dolphin conservation was also conducted. Dr B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI sensitized the fishermen and make them aware about the significance regarding the conservation of Gangetic Fishes including prized Hilsa. More than 100 Fishers along the river Ganga were sensitized and apprised about the importance of the River. The programme was witnessed by Dr Sandeep Behera, Biodiversity Consultant, NMCG and officials of ICAR-CIFRI, NMCG, Base Hospital were also present on this occasion.
