Fishers Field School for ecosystem-based integrated wetland management: An initiative from ICAR-CIFRI ICAR-CIFRI initiated Fisher Field School at Khalsi beel, Haringhata, Nadia West Bengal to promote ecosystem-based integrated wetland management on 18th February, 2022. The Fisher Field School is based on the principle of Farmer Field School Approach of FAO, which is basically a group-based adult learning approach that may enlighten the fishers, farmers and community members to solve their problems by themselves. Forty women beneficiaries from fishermen community were selected for two interactive learning schools.
ICAR-CIFRI has adopted the Khalsi beel under a DBT Societal Sector Project and Scheduled Caste Subplan for upscaling the socio-economic status of the fishermen community. Components like Pen culture, Culture Based Fisheries, Ornamental Fish Culture, Backyard poultry farming, Kitchen gardening and Mushroom cultivation have been introduced as cost effective technologies for economic empowerment of the fishermen community. Dr. B.K Das, Director CIFRI has build a multidisciplinary team of scientists to establish Fisher Field School at Khalsi beel area to encourage self-confidence and self-reliance among the community members which will ultimately lead to livelihood improvement of the beel dependent community. The team includes Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. Arun Pandit, Dr. A.K Bera and Dr. Dibakar Bhakta from ICAR-CIFRI and Dr. Pintoo Bandopadhyay and Dr. Sanchita Mandal from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia,West Bengal.
Along with the initiation programme of Fisher Field School an off campus training also conducted on “Empowering women of wetland dependent community through cost effective technologies. A total of 77 women and 35 fishermen participated in the training programme.
