Training-cum-workshop on “Catch Estimation Methods for Inland Open Waterbodies” on 8th November 2021 at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore

ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore conducted a one day virtual training-cum-workshop on “Catch Estimation Methods for Inland Open Waterbodies” on 8th November 2021 for various State Fisheries Dept. officials of India. The programme was aimed to provide the basic understanding of sampling strategies and their implementation for the estimation of fish catch in various inland open waterbodies‚ viz. Reservoir, Wetlands and River etc. Dr. Basant Kumar Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, welcomed all the participants and briefed about the fish catch scenarios of the country and objectives of the programme.
Dr. Malay Naskar, Principal Scientist has given the elaborate lecture on fish catch estimation for estuarine, wetland, reservoir, river. He explained the different aspects of fish catch scenarios for all types of open water bodies and their respective catch estimation strategies. Artisanal fishing is a unique fish catch method applicable in some specific area which was thoroughly explained in the training programme. The lecture was followed by a excel sheet presentation for practical exercise of fish catch estimation for different water bodies.
There was an interactive session for the participants to discuss about their problems and queries related to fish catch estimation in their field and feedback. Programme was organized through Zoom platform and about 35 participants from different fisheries state departments of India (Hayana, Chhatisgarh, Bihar, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, HP, Goa, AP, Mizoram etc.) and 15 Scientists attended the programme. At the end, Dr. V.V. Sugunan, FAO consultant gave his remarks and valuable suggestions to all the participants. The programme ended with formal vote of thanks.
