Awareness and input distribution programme for YAAS affected fishers at Sagar Island, Sundarbans under SCSP & STC

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute is actively involved for the livelihood development of SC and ST community in different parts of India under SCSP and STC programme. In this line ICAR-CIFRI is taking up a programme for the development of the livelihood of the SC and ST community of Sagar Island, Sunderbans, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal by strengthening the fisheries of the Island through awareness and skill development and fisheries input supply for the YAAS affected people. On 20th October 2021, ICAR-CIFRI conducted fisheries awareness and input distribution programme at Sagar Island. Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, addressed 105 SC & ST fish farmers in the programme. Dr. Das mentioned about the scope and importance of fisheries for livelihood development in rural areas. He also advised the fishers to seriously take up the fisheries development scheme under SCSP and STC programme to double their income from fisheries activities. The Director distributed fish seed to 105 fishers on this occasion. It was decided that in this year ICAR-CIFRI will support 250 SC and 100 ST fishers for their livelihood improvement by providing fish seed, lime and other fisheries implements. Sri B. C. Hazra, Hon’ble Minister, Sundarbans affairs, Govt. of West Bengal highly appreciated the initiative for the development of SC & ST community in the Island by ICAR-CIFRI. Dr. Sandeep Behera, Consultant, NMCG, who was also present in the meeting mentioned about the importance of the conservation of biodiversity and habitat protection in Ganga river in his official address. Dr. P.K. Parida, Dr. A.K. Sahoo and Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI coordinated the programme.
