Schedule caste fishers of Odisha trained on Ornamental fisheries at ICAR-CIFRI

A training program on “Opportunities of Inland Open water Ornamental fishes for Livelihood Enhancement and Employment generation” was conducted by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore in collaboration with Rotary Club, Cuttack from 13-17 September, 2021 under SCSP program. A total of 17 SC fishers of Satyabhamapur village (well known for the birth place of Utkala Gourava Shri. Madhusudan Das”) Cuttack, Odisha were participated in this training program, among them, 9 were women. Prior to the training, an initial onsite meeting and awareness was held at Satyabhamapur with the Dr. B. K Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, about the “Ornamental fish and its importance in income generation” with the villagers. Based on the discussion, ICAR-CIFRI provided them culture tank, feed and other aquarium accessories to begin the culture of ornamental fishes. Dr. Das has enlightened the fishers about the necessity of ornamental fish farming and also emphasized about entrepreneurship development in the ornamental fish farming. In the training, the trainees learnt the process of fabrication of aquarium, handling the ornamental fishes, breeding of different fishes, like live bearer (guppy, molly,platy and swordtail) and egg layers (Gold fish, koi carp). They also learn about the feed (both natural and artificial) and feeding time of fish; common disease and their treatment with common management practices in aquarium such as water exchange, use of thermostat, selection common aquarium fish to keep in aquaria etc. Additionally, a local visit was also arranged for them to one ornamental villages in Kolkata. Also, on the occasion of International Millet Day 17th September 2021, millet powder and some value added millet products were distributed to the trainees. This training programme was coordinated by Dr. P.K. Parida, Ms. P.R. Swain and Dr. M. Shaya Devi.
