CIFRI Awards
As part of the outreach activities initiated by ICAR-CIFRI under the dynamic leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and guidance of Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science), ICAR, New Delhi, ICAR-CIFRI HDPE Pen technology was successfully demonstrated in Bamuni beel (Kamrup Rural district) and Charan beel (Baksa district) of Assam under NEH component of the Institute. Pen enclosures were installed in an area of 3000 m2 (6 pens of area 500 m2 each) for table fish production in each beel. The pens were stocked with fingerlings of Labeo rohita (mean length, 12.25 cm; mean weight, 22.78 g) and Cirrhinus mrigala (mean length, 13.03 cm; mean weight, 22.24 g) in Bamuni and Charan beel respectively during March, 2021. Fingerlings of both the species were stocked at the rate of 3, 6 and 9 no. m-2 in duplicate. The total culture period was 6 months. At the time of final harvest, size of L. rohita ranged from 55-415 g in weight and 16-30 cm in length; size of C. mrigala ranged from 104-309 g in weigth and 18-27 cm in length. Approximately 3.0-3.2 tonnes of L. rohita and 2.2-2.5 tonnes of C. mrigala was harvested from Bamuni and Charan beel respectively. On the occasion of final harvest of fish from pens, field days were organized in Bamuni beel on 7th September and in Charan beel on 8th September, 2021. The programmes were organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati & PI, NEH project. The programmes were conducted by Dr. Simanku Borah, Dr. Pronob Das and Mr. Anil Kumar Yadav, Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati. The basic objective of demonstrating ICAR-CIFRI HDPE Pen technology among tribal beel fishers was to popularize this technology and create awareness on pen culture in beels, at the same time improving livelihood of fishers. A total of 205 tribal families (belonging to Bodo community) from Bamuni (65 families) and Charan beel (140 families) have reaped benefits from this program. The secretaries of the Meen Palan Samiti of the respective beels expressed their sincere gratitude on behalf of fisher community of Bamuni and Charan beels to Director, ICAR-CIFRI for this successful initiative.
