Captive nursery raising of climate smart and auto breeder fish, Systomus sarana in Beledanga Wetland under SCSP program.

To enhance the production of minor carps and climate smart fishes, ICAR-CIFRI under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, taken an initiative to stock the auto breeder and climate smart fish, Systomus sarana in all the wetlands adopted under SCSP programme.
This will help to increase the fish production and also reduce the stocking cost every time by the fishers, as the fish species is an auto breeder and can breed in the wetland itself. Around 10,000 numbers of Systomus sarana (Sarana puti) fingerlings of average size of 8.02±0.98 g stocked in captive nursery of Beledanga wetland, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal on 17th July 2021. The species is being stocked keeping in mind its auto breeding ability and hardy nature. The entire stocking program was conducted in presence of the wetland fisheries society members. The fishermen were educated about the importance of Sarana fish in the wetland fisheries. Fingerlings of Sarana stocked in captive nursery for a period of 6 weeks to attain advance fingerlings and then will be released to the wetland.
The Programme was conceptualized by Dr B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and coordinated by Dr. P. K. Parida and Mr. H. S. Swain. Mr. K. Mondal, Mr. Purna Chandra, YP-II and other SCSP staff of ICAR-CIFRI actively participated in the stocking program.
