Online Interactive Programme on “Ecosystem-based management for fisheries and aquaculture of NER” organized at ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati on 10th July, 2021

The Guwahati Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) organized an online interactive programme on “Ecosystem-based management for fisheries and aquaculture of NER” in collaboration with the ICAR-Agricultural Technology Research and Application Institute (ICAR-ATARI), Zone-VI, Guwahati on 10.07.21 as part of ‘Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ and ‘National Fish Farmers’ Day 2021’. A total of 467 fish farmers and scientists representing 90 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim participated in the online programme. Dr. Bagish Kumar, Scientist, ICAR-ATARI, Guwahati welcomed the participants and dignitaries. Delivering the lead lecture, Dr. A. K. Tripathi, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Guwahati stressed on the need for practicing ecosystem-based management for fisheries and aquaculture in the NE Region by the fish farmers. These include following the package-of-practices developed by the Fisheries Research Institutes/ Universities and avoiding unnecessary chemicals in pond aquaculture. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati Regional Centre explained the scientific basis for ecosystem-based management for fisheries and aquaculture to ensure their long-term sustainability. He stressed on the need for maintaining the pristine ecological conditions of fisheries resources of the NE region like beels, reservoirs, rivers, etc. to conserve valuable indigenous fish resources of the region. Dr. S. Yengkokpam, Sr. Scientist proposed the vote of thanks. Scientists (Dr. D. Debnath, Mr. A. K. Yadav, Dr. P. Das, Dr. S.C.S. Das, Mrs. Niti Sharma, Dr. N.S. Singh), Technical staff (Mr. B.C. Ray, Mr. A. Kakati) and research scholars (Mr. Piklu Debnath, A.K. Borgohain, D. Bordoloi, Kaushik Das, K. Borah) participated in the interactive session.
