Report on Online Training on Sampling Techniques for Fish Catch Estimation in Inland Open Waterbodies for State Government Officials

Selecting and implementing an appropriate sampling strategy for fish catch data collection and fish catch estimation is a major concern for state fisheries departments since it is complex and diverse in nature with different types. To address such issues of fish catch estimation, ICAR-CIFRI organized an online training programme on “Sampling Techniques for Fish Catch Estimation in Inland Open Waterbodies on 6th July. 2021. The training mainly focused on exploring the concepts of sampling techniques and its applications and familiarizing data collection and catch estimation methods aiming to recent PMMSY programme for propoer document of the inland catch. The training programme saw an overwhelming response from State Fisheries Departments with 125 participants. States like Himachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh enthusiastically participated in the training programme. 50 officials from Bihar, 20 officials from Sikkim, 12 from Tripura were present in the online training session.Dr. B. K. Das, Hon. Director, ICAR-CIFRI and also Course Director in his welcome addresses stressed on the need of this kind of training and how it would benefit the Fisheries Sector through enhanced catch documentation. He also mentioned about devising a single platform to document fish catch estimation developing online apps for greater visibility. Dr. B. K. Das delivered a lecture on “Overview of inland openwater fisheries and fish catch pattern”. He stressed on Cost Benefit Analysis and importance of preventing germplasm depletion. This was followed by a lecture by Mrs Chayna Jana, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI on “Fish Catch Estimation in ponds and tanks” whereby she explained the various sampling techniques and method of catch assessment survey. Then, Dr. Malay Naskar, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI demonstrated a lecture on “Fish Catch Estimation in river, estuaries, wetlands and reservoirs”. He discussed about the sampling shortcomings in data collection, stratification strategies and simplified techniques of catch estimation. Interaction and discussion followed the lectures during which the State Fishery Officials cleared their doubts. The training programme was a great success and it was decided statewise handholding will be extended for more frequent conduction of similar training programmes.
