ICAR-CIFRI celebrates 75th Foundation day

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore Celebrated its 75th (Platinum Jubilee) Foundation day on 17th March 2021 at Institute headquarter, Barrackpore Kolkata offline as well as on online platform. ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute is one of the premier research institutions of the country in inland fisheries sector, established on 17th March 1947 and under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research. In his welcome address, Dr. B. K. Das, Director CIFRI, Barrackpore congratulated all CIFRIans, Progressive fish farmers, fisheries industries, etc. who were part of the momentous 74 years journey of ICAR-CIFRI success story. In 75 years of its existence, Institute has generated very useful inland fishery technologies on induced breeding and fish seed production; Composite fish culture; Fish seed prospecting and spawn collection in rivers; Reservoir and floodplain wetland fisheries management and In situ fish seed production in cage and pen. The institute has also developed relevant guidelines for sustainable management of inland fisheries management. The institute has played a pioneering role in ushering fisheries and aquaculture Revolution in India through its research and technology development that has enabled the country to increase the production of fish by 11 times, since 1950-51, thus making a visible impact on the national food and nutritional security. Swami Viswamayananda Ji, Secretary, Ram Krishna Mission Ashram, Sargachi, Murshidabad, and Chief Guest of the platinum jubilee foundation day addressed the gathering and appreciated the work of ICAR-CIFRI during the Pandemic period. He also congratulated the awardees of the Institute and the authors of the publication released during the foundation day. He stressed upon the importance of integrated fish farming technology and expects more collaborative work among all institutes to explore more opportunity. He emphasised that innovation and invention should reach each and every door of common people by quoting the speech of Swami Vivekananda Ji. Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries science), ICAR addressed the platinum jubilee celebration online. He appreciated the work of ICAR-CIFRI during the COVID 19 Pandemic period and also congratulated all the ex CIFRIans and all the staff members on the occasion of platinum Jubilee foundation day. Dr. Dr. B. S. Mahapatra, Vice Chancellor, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya greeted the ICAR-CIFRI family on the occasion of 75th foundation day and remarked that it is a matter of great pride that the institute is serving the nation since independence. He appreciated the tremendous work done by the country throughout the work. He emphasised integration of fish culture especially nutrient dense small indigenous fishes with agricultural activities. Dr. D. S. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata congratulated ICAR-CIFRI for completing 74 glorious years of service to the nation. He appreciated the excellent achievements of the institute even during the COVID period. He said that the efforts of the staff for bringing laurels to the institute in form of patents, technologies, project etc. are praiseworthy. He also appreciated the Ganga fishery rejuvenation and conservation activities take up by the institute under the prestigious NMCG project. He remarked that the research and development activities taken up by CIFRI directly cater to the societal developments. In his remarks Dr. Gauranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF congratulated Director ICAR-CIFRI for excellent leadership and conveyed his best wishes on this occasion. He also lauded the developmental activities of the institute during COVID period. He spoke on grave issues like declining availability of water and stressed on increasing per unit water productivity and decreasing water footprints of agricultural activities. He also discussed issues of habitat degradation, climate change and emphasized on need based and demand driven research projects for doubling farmers income. Dr. V. V. Sugunan, FAO consultant and Former ADG, (Inland Fisheries), ICAR also appreciated the work of ICAR-CIFRI and remembered the predecessor of the Institute who brought laurels to the institute and developed the milestone technologies. The Institute released a number of publications in form of books like “ICAR-CIFRI coffee table book’, ‘Common plankton of river Ganga’, ‘Strategic plan for inland open water fisheries development under PMMSY’, ‘Antarstaliya matsyiki samvardhan and sanrakshan’ and hindi folders on fisheries development in wetlands of Bihar. Appreciation awards were given to meritorious students of the staff family. Institutional awards for best scientist, technical, administrative, supporting, and research scholar for the year 2020-2021 were presented to awardees by Chief guests and guests of honor. The vote of thanks was proposed by Shri Rajiv Lal, Joint Director and Registrar. The program ended with National anthem. The Platinum jubilee foundation day cake was cut by honourable dignitaries. The grand ceremony was culminated with ranching of 20000 advance fingerlings of indigenous fishes in River Ganga by the honourable guests at Barrackpore ghat. Farmers Scientists interaction session was organized on this occasion, where more than 150 fishers participated.
