ICAR-CIFRI organized on-campus training programmes for Tribal beneficiaries from Rishia Dam,Odisha

Two consecutive on-campus training programs on “Production enhancement through Reservoir Fisheries management” and the training on “Opportunity of Inland open water Ornamental fisheries management for income generation” for the tribal beneficiaries of Rishia Dam, Balasore under STC, Odisha were successfully conducted by ICAR-CIFRI during 20-22 February,2021 at ICAR-CIFRI. On 20 th February 2021 a Farmer-Scientist- Interface was conducted at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarter and about 42 tribal fishers participated in the interface meeting. Training Needs of the tribal beneficiaries were identified and based on that the training programmes were conceptualized under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 20 tribal fishermen were trained on reservoir fisheries management, culture-based fisheries, and pen culture and 25 fisherwomen were trained on the Ornamental fish culture, breeding and aquarium fabrication for their livelihood improvement. In the interface session Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI has emphasized the present production of Rishia reservoir of Odisha and its actual potential yield. Dr. Das interacted with the fishers and sensitized them about the importance of the scientific management of reservoirs for enhancing fish production in a sustainable manner and the opportunity of ornamental fisheries as an alternative livelihood option for the women of the tribal community. A field exposure visit was organized for the beneficiary trainees to the wetlands and to the Ornamental fish village of Howrah. Considering the pandemic COVID-19 situation all the precautionary measures were taken care and the face masks and sanitizers were distributed among the trainees. The training programme was well covered by the print and electronic media. The training program was coordinated by Dr. A. Roy, Dr. P. K. Parida, Ms P.R. Swain, Mr. H. S. Swain , Mr. M. H. Ramteke and Dr. Sanjay Bhawmick.
