ICAR-CIFRI organized Online Training on “Beel fisheries management” at Guwahati on Nov. 27, 2020.

An online training programme on “Beel fisheries management” was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore at its Guwahati Regional Centre on 27.11.2020. The aim of the virtual training programme was to sensitize the wetland fishers and lessees of beels under Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd. (AFDC), Guwahati about guidelines of beel fisheries management and enclosure culture technologies to improve their income and livelihood. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre (RC), Guwahati welcomed Mrs. Anuradha Adhikari Sarma, ACS, Managing Director (MD) and Shri P.K. Hazarika, OSD, AFDC Ltd., Guwahati, Assam who graced the inaugural session of the programme at the Centre. Dr. Bhattacharjya stated that the present online training was organized to enhance the technical knowledge of beel fishers and lessees. He informed that collaborative pen culture demonstrations have been initiated in 10 beels under the AFDC Ltd. under the guidance of Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science), ICAR, New Delhi and leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. In her inaugural address, the MD, AFDC Ltd. thanked the Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati for initiating this virtual training platform for disseminating scientific and technical know-how for sustainable utilization of beel fisheries resources of Assam. She requested the Director, ICAR-CIFRI to conduct/ facilitate exposure visit of beel lessees and fishers under the Corporation to visit West Bengal for further motivating them. The OSD, AFDC Ltd. stated that the Guwahati RC of ICAR-CIFRI has developed and disseminated guidelines and technologies for beel fisheries enhancement since the 90’s. He expressed happiness that the ICAR-CIFRI and AFDC Ltd. have been working in close collaboration for improving income and livelihoods of beel fishers of Assam since the past 5 years. He thanked the Director, ICAR-CIFRI, and the Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati for their constant technical support to the AFDC Ltd. for scientific management of beel fisheries. A total of 44 (34 online and 10 offline) participants took active part in the technical session of the training programme and interaction that followed. In the technical session, Dr. Bhattacharjya explained about pen culture technology and fish stock enhancement guidelines for beel fisheries development in local language. Dr. D. Debnath, Sr. Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati elaborated on cage culture technology. Importance of fish feed and feeding management for enclosure culture technologies was highlighted by Dr. S. Yengkokpam, Sr. Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati. Interactive session was conducted by Dr. S.C.S. Das, Dr. N. Samarendra Singh, Scientists, Mr. Amulya Kakati, STA (ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati), Dr. Aparna Roy, Mr. S.K. Sahu, Scientists; Mr. Avishek Saha, STA and Mr. Pratik Pathak, YP-II (ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore) also took part for clarifying doubts of the participants.
