ICAR-CIFRI adopts Duma and Sindrani beel for livelihood support under SCSP.

ICAR-CIFRI is working for fisheries development of beels of West Bengal with the able guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI under SCSP programme. Presently, ICAR-CIFRI is working with the fisheries cooperatives of 6 beels of West Bengal for their fisheries development. A team of SCSP visited other beels and found that cooperatives of Duma and Sindrani are interested to work with the technical support of ICAR-CIFRI for their development. A meeting was called under the leadership of Dr. B.K. Das with the cooperative members of both the beels on 3rd November 2020. A team of 14 members from the beels discussed with the Director, senior officials and SCSP team of ICAR-CIFRI. Duma is having an area of 227 ha with an asset of 8 ponds. Total member of the society is 1137, out of which 20 are women. The society was established in the year 1959 and present productivity is 228 kg/ha. Sindrani beel was having an area of 106 ha. The society was established in the year 1957 and the present members strength is 271(including 12 female) members and production is around 550 kg/ha.

Dr. M. A. Hassan, HoD, FEM division, discussed in details for the sustainable management of beels. Dr. Das, encouraged the cooperatives to increased their production at least up to 750-800 kg /ha. He also advised them on the marketing strategy to generate more income from the same production. The team of SCSP had a detailed discussion with the cooperative team members about the implementation strategy. MoU was signed the both the cooperatives for their fisheries development, Sindrani fisheries cooperative was given 4 sets of 0.1 ha pen and 6 coracles for the in-situ raising of fish seed for their beel. Dr. Lianthumulia, Dr. A. Roy, Dr. Sanjay Bhowmick, Ms. Sangeeta Chakraborty and Mr. Kausik Mandol were present in the meeting. Dr. P. K. Parida, Nodal officer SCSP coordinated the whole programme.
