ICAR-CIFRI Prayagraj celebrated the National Fish Farmers' Day

The Prayagraj Regional Centre of the ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) celebrated National Fish Farmers' Day with great enthusiasm on 10th July 2026 at Prakash Fish Enterprise, Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. National Fish Farmers' Day is celebrated in India every year on 10th July to recognise the contributions of fish farmers and highlight the importance of fisheries and aquaculture in food security, employment, and economic development.

It recognises the hard work and dedication of fish farmers in producing nutritious food, and it also raises awareness about scientific fish farming, sustainable aquaculture practices, and modern technologies. On this day, progressive fish farmers are being awarded for their contribution to Indian Aquaculture. One progressive fish farmer, Mr Ram Prakash, from Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh, was honoured on this occasion for his outstanding contribution to the fisheries sector. He has been actively seeking technical guidance from ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj, to enhance his fish farming practices. Fisheries contribute significantly to India's agricultural economy, exports, and employment, especially in rural and coastal areas. Addressing the occasion, scientists from ICAR-CIFRI shared views on the recent research findings and innovative technologies aimed at improving fish productivity, seed quality, and the sustainable management of inland fisheries resources.

The programme brought together fish farmers from across the region, entrepreneurs, and scientists to recognise the invaluable contribution of fish farmers towards ensuring food and nutritional security, generating rural livelihoods, and promoting sustainable inland fisheries development. The event was coordinated by Dr V.R. Thakur and attended by ICAR-CIFRI scientists Dr D.N. Jha, Dr Absar Alam and Dr Vikas Kumar, and technical and supporting staff of ICAR-CIFRI. The celebration was organised under the overall guidance of Dr Pradeep Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, and Dr B.R. Chavan, Head, Regional Centre, Prayagraj.
The programme reaffirmed ICAR-CIFRI's commitment to strengthening inland fisheries through research, innovation, capacity building, and close collaboration with fish farmers for enhancing productivity, profitability, and the sustainable utilisation of aquatic resources.
