Awareness Programme on ‘Inland Fisheries and Sustainable Livelihood’ in Pamba River organized by ICAR-CIFRI

ICAR-CIFRI Kochi Research Station organized an awareness programme on ‘Inland fisheries and sustainable livelihood’ on 18.02.2026 as a part of the ongoing institute project ‘Estimation of fish catch, diversity and socio-economic status of fishers of Pamba River towards fisheries and livelihood sustainability’. The programme aimed to sensitise inland fishers on responsible fishing practices, conservation of indigenous fish species, and strategies for improving livelihood security. Around 17 fishers of the Pamba Inland Fishermen Cooperative Society actively participated in the programme and shared their experiences. Smt. Shilpa Pradeep, Fisheries Extension Officer, Matsyabhavan, Thiruvalla, graced the occasion and addressed the participants. During the interaction, fishers highlighted several field-level challenges, including, declining fish catch, damage to fishing gears and catch due to otters, illegal fishing activities affecting resource sustainability, reduced profitability and increasing operational costs. The programme reinforced the importance of collective action for sustainable resource use. The participating fishers expressed willingness to adopt responsible fishing measures. Under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI and Dr. S. K. Manna, Head of Division, the programme was coordinated by Dr. Deepa Sudheesan and Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul.
