ICAR-CIFRI established ornamental fish unit in Bhadrak, Odisha - a way towards self-employment of rural women.

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore established an ornamental fish culture unit at Ramkrishna Sevashram, Bhadrak, Odisha for SC women of different villages of Bhadrak, Odisha under SCSP programme. The primary aim of the programme is to empower SC women and to make them self-employed by providing alternative source of income. The ornamental fish unit was inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Swami Ashrananda Ji, Center head of Ramkrishna Sevashram, Bhadrak on 24 October 2020. Dr. B. K. Das in his address highlighted the importance and opportunity of the ornamental fish culture and how the rural women will get alternative income and increase their earning basket from the sector.

Prior to the establishment of the unit a training programme on ornamental fish culture was conducted at Ramkrishna Sevashram, Bhadrak for 7 days from 18 to 24 October 2020 to strengthen the theoretical and practical skill of SC women for ornamental fish culture through learning by doing, practical, demonstrations and class room sessions. In the first phase, ICAR-CIFRI provided 25 fish holding tanks of 350 L capacity along with ornamental fish, plants, medicines, heaters, air blowers and pipes to the SC women. The programme was jointly organized by ICAR-CIFRI, Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Royal, Odisha and Ramkrishna Sevashram, Bhadrak.
