SC fishers of Odisha trained in Inland Fisheries Management

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute has conducted training on reservoir and wetland fisheries management for the fishers of Odisha in the Institute Under SCSP subplan. Under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, the institute is executing Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) programme in Salia reservoir, Bagua reservoir and Keshpura-Paigasida wetland of Odisha. Under SCSP programme different fisheries implements like HDPE pen, fish net, fish seed, fish feed and fishing boats were distributed by ICAR-CIFRI to the Primary Fishermen Cooperative Society of Salia reservoir, Ganjam District; Bagua reservoir, Nayagarh District and Keshpura wetland and Paigasida wetland, Baleswar of Odisha where most of beneficiaries were SC. Many reservoirs and wetlands of Odisha were not scientifically managed and the present fish yields were lower than the potential fish yield. In this context ICAR-CIFRI conducted three days training during 12-14 March 2020 on reservoir and wetland fisheries management for 37 SC fishers of Salia reservoir (6), Bagua reservoir (22) and Keshpura (4) and Paikasida (5) wetlands of Odisha under Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP). The training programme was carried out to strengthen the theoretical knowledge and practical skill of the fishers for reservoir and wetland fisheries management through practical, field exposure visits to pen culture in wetlands and visit to fish seed hatchery, demonstrations and class room sessions with the involvement of various resource personnel having expertise in wetland and reservoir fisheries management from ICAR-CIFRI. The training cover different aspects of reservoir and wetland fisheries including importance of natural food in wetland and reservoir, cage and pen culture for seed raising, stocking and harvesting strategies in reservoir and wetland, feed management for enclosure culture, conflict management, financial management, seed raising in nursery pond, water and soil parameters management etc. The training was coordinated by Dr. P.
