Need-based skilled training progarmme for the fishers of Samastipur district of Bihar towards livelihood security

The State Bihar is very resourceful in terms of Inland open waters like rivers, chaurs, floodplain wetlands, oxbow lakes and reservoirs and so is the district Samastipur. In spite of abundant aquatic resources the supply of adequate fish is short of demand in the State of Bihar. By seeing the need of fishers of Samastipur district a 7 day skilled training programme on “Fisheries management in Inland waters” has been organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore from 17-23rd January 2020 as a part of skill development and capacity building programme with a mission to increase the fishers’ income. A total of 31 active fishers have participated in the programme. While inaugurating the programme the Director of the Institute, Dr. B.K. Das emphasised on the skill development of the fishers on various aspects of Inland fisheries management to ensure their sustainable livelihood security. As a part of the training, they were exposed to theoretical and practical knowledge along with field visits. The topics have been covered on different aspects of inland fisheries management, including soil and water quality management, natural fish food organisms, feed management, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional aspects of fishes, fish health management, wetland fisheries management, cage and pen culture techniques, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing, etc. As par the request of the trainees special classes on biofloc and Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) have also been covered. To expose them in different fisheries activities, field visits to ICAR-CIFA Kalyani fish farms, Khamargachi private fish farms, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), Galiff street ornamental fish markets were visited. The RAS and hatchery units were also explained to them in an adequate way. The training programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Archan K.
