World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18th-24th Nov, 2019)

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized “ World Antibiotic Awareness Week” to create awareness on developing antimicrobial resistance particularly in Animals and Fisheries amongst general public, farmers, office staffs, scholars and students during 18th to 24th Nov. 2019. The awareness programee was inaugurated with a lecture on “Development of AMR in Aquaculture and Inland Open waters” by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI followed by a series of lectures by the experts. During the programme, twenty Fisheries development officers from different states including West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya, were updated with information on the commonly used drugs in Aquaculture and Fish diseases, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance development and use and mis-use of antibiotics in open waters. Further, the AMR team along with the extension unit of ICAR-CIFRI went to the door step of the Rastra Guru Surendranath College, Barrackpore in the Departments of Zoology, Food and Nutrition and Microbiology and created one day lectures cum interaction-cum-awareness on AMR for 67 students of Bachelor degree. A pledge on AMR as circulated by FAO/WHO (https://pledge.antibioticawarenessweek.org/en/#2/-1.0/153.7) was taken by more than 85 people including students, staffs and scholars. Displayed banners, and posters carrying AMR information were placed in public places and more than 200 leaflets were distributed amongst the students, official staff and ornamental fish culture farmers.
