Workshop on “Management of Wetland Fisheries of Bihar” organized by ICAR-CIFRI at Patna

One day workshop cum training programme was organized at the Bihar Veterinary College, Patna by ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata in collaboration with Bihar Animal Science University, Patna on 20 November 2019. Dr. Prem Kumar, honourable minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Government of Bihar was the chief guest of the programme. The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of lamp by chief guest and other dignitaries.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barackpore in his welcome address outlined the objective of the workshop and the importance of wetland fisheries management in Bihar. He emphasized that through the ICAR-CIFRI’s technological interventions the productivity of the wetlands of East Champaran district of Bihar increased by 2-3 times. The production of Kararia maun has increased from 18 tons to 57 tons. He stressed that through the dissemination of wetland management protocol developed by ICAR-CIFRI, the productivity of wetlands in Bihar can be raised significantly.

Dr, Prem Kumar, honourable minister in his address emphasized that Bihar has 9000 ha maun and 2,00,000 ha of chaur water resources where at present the productivity is 200 and 50 kg/ha/year. There are enormous possibilities of increasing it by almost three times. He stressed that ICAR-CIFRI under wetland development program in five mauns of East Champaran district has visibly shown it to the stakeholder. The fish yield increase from 180 kg/ha/yr to 675 kg/ha/yr in Kararia Maun; 190 kg/ha/yr to 320 kg/ha/yr in Sirsa Maun; 70 kg/ha/yr to 140 kg/ha/yr in Rulhi Maun and 60 kg/ha/yr to 120 kg/ha/yr in Majharia Maun has proved that through technological intervention the production and productivity of the wetland can be enhanced. He thanked Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Vice Chancellor, Bihar Animal Science University for organizing this program at Patna for the benefits of all fishers of Bihar.

Smt N. Vijayalakshmi, IAS, Principal Secretary, animal and fisheries resources, Government of Bihar stressed on the replication of ICAR-CIFRI model of wetland fisheries development in other district of Bihar. She also outlined the various program run by fisheries department of Bihar for the benefit of fishers.

Dr. Rameshwar Singh, Vice Chancellor, Bihar Animal Science University, Patna said that BASU, Patna and ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore has signed MOU for collaboration in various facets of inland fisheries research and development. Organization of this workshop was a part of joint collaboration of these two institutions. He stressed that with adoption of technologies, fish production can be enhanced in Bihar and this will also reduce the dependence of import of fishes from other states. He thanked Director, ICAR-CIFRI for conducting this programme at a shrt notice.

Shri Nishad Ahmad, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, in his address told the audience that scientists of ICAR-CIFRI has to do a lot of struggle to resolve all the conflicts among different fishers to achieve this success at project sites at East Champaran district. He appealed all the project beneficiaries to continue to practice culture based fisheries after the completion of the project.

Dr. Raman Trivedi, Director, students welfars, BASU proposed the vote of thanks.

Shri Suman Kumar, Joint Director, DoF, Bihar, Dr. M. A. Hassan, Dr. Ganesh Chandra and Dr. Raju Baitha from ICAR-CIFRI, Dr. Kamal Sharma from ICAR-RCER, Patna and Shri Abhas Kumar Mandal from DOF, Bihar also addressed the gathering.

Faculty members of BASU, Patna, Officials of state fisheries department, scientist and technical officer of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and ICAR-RCER, Patna and one hundred and fifty fish farmers of East Champran participated in the workshop.
