Statistical Foundation Course for Inland Fisheries Data analysis ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, 2nd -9th August 2019 Training Report

A training program on “Statistical Foundation Course for Inland Fisheries Data analysis” was organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, during 2nd -9th August 2019. A total of 11 participants, including assistant professors, scientists, students and scholars from four different fisheries institutes such as college of fisheries science, Raha, AAU; ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore; College of Fisheries, Dholi, DRPCAU; Vidyasagar University, West Bengal participated in the training programme. At the outset, Dr. R. K. Raman, Scientist cum coordinator of training programme, welcomed all, and Dr. M. Naskar, Principal Scientist cum coordinator of training, enlightened briefly about training to the participants and course structure. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, Director cum convenor of the training programme and also elaborated the importance of statistics in inland fisheries research and he urged the participants to actively participate and learn the techniques. The aim of this training programme was to update and improve the concept of basic statistical analytical skills for inland fisheries data analysis. The course was structured in two modules with class room lectures followed by practical exercise using statistical software. The lectures of the training programme included utility of statistical tools and associated packages for the inland fisheries management: status and future prospects, nature and concept of data for inland fisheries management, basic concept of sampling in data collection and analysis for inland fisheries data, concept testing of hypothesis and parametric test of significance, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and design of experiments, nonparametric application and approach for handling inland fisheries data, test of significance based on chi-square, concept of simple correlation and regression for fisheries data analysis, introduction to statistical software such as R, SPSS and SAS and its basic operation for data analysis. The valedictory function was organised on 9th August, 2019. On this event all the participants were welcomed by Mr. A. K. Yadav Scientist cum co-coordinator presented brief report about training program including impact of training on the participants. Evaluation of trainees was carried out before and after the training and their feedback was taken for self improvement if any. Maximum participants gave their feedback with a request to conduct more training programme of longer duration. At the end of programme Dr. D. N. Jha, Scientist cum co-coordinator of training, formally offered vote of thanks to all for their participation and their cooperation in successful organisation of training program.
